The YWCA is proud to have offered safety to women and children fleeing violence for over three decades, but the old shelter was cramped. Communal living at a time of great crisis is taxing. Families resided in 97 square foot rooms, and up to 50 shared two kitchens and two bathrooms. The YWCA wanted to offer more than just safety to clients, they wanted to give them the dignity and healing that individual space offers.

In December of 2008, the YWCA’s board voted to purchase a new building to move the shelter. In the midst of an economic recession, the Board acted boldly to meet the needs of YWCA clients and launched a $5 million dollar campaign to purchase, renovate, and sustain the new building.

The campaign concluded in October 2010, the result of over 500 donors joining forces to support women and children. This new space offers individual apartments to families the YWCA harbors. It offers private kitchens and bathrooms in each unit, and more space for kids, pets, and moms as they heal. It offers 30 more beds—an increase of 60%.

The wise, visionary women of the YWCA decided to show clients they are worthy of a beautiful space to heal with dignity in the privacy of their own apartments.
