Emergency Shelter

Emergency Shelter

Safe and Confidential Temporary Housing
YWCA Pierce County opened the first domestic violence shelter in our state in 1976. We continue to provide safe and confidential temporary housing for survivors and their children fleeing immediately dangerous situations due to domestic violence. Our shelter program includes up to 90 days of housing, basic needs, support services, and 24-hour advocacy.

Secure and Private Accommodations

Our emergency shelter consists of individual apartment units where each family can heal in a beautiful, welcoming space. Each unit offers privacy with private kitchens and bathrooms, allowing parents and their children to heal and thrive in a secure environment. All survivors are welcome regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity or expression, religion, or sexual orientation.

Pets Are Family Too

YWCA Pierce County is the only shelter in Pierce County, and one of very few across the country, that allows families to bring their pets. We provide comprehensive support for pets, including food, veterinarian care, grooming, and pet deposits for families moving into new homes. Between 25% and 45% of domestic violence victims don’t leave their abusers out of fear for their pet’s lives (American Humane Association).

How to Access Our Shelter Services

All programs and services require an intake call or phone screening. Please call our 24-Hour Hotline at 253-383-2593 to speak with an advocate regarding shelter services, safety planning, or referrals to community resources. You can also email our Crisis Line at
